Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
-
What are the steps to becoming a volunteer?
-
Please fill out the application above with thorough details about your interest. Then, our HR team will review your responses and reach out with an interview invitation. If the interview goes well, we will walk you through onboarding procedures and welcome you to the team!
-
When can I expect to hear back about the status of my volunteer application?
-
Starting in January 2023, we are implementing a new "cohort" system for application reviews. We will be reviewing applications received up until January 2nd and sending out interview invitations accordingly.
-
For both the Campus Brain Ambassador Network's Google Form application and the Typeform application for general volunteer positions, the forms will remain open to submissions throughout the year. However, we will not be reviewing applications until May 21st. Applications received between January 2nd and May 21st will be reviewed at that point.
-
We envision that this new "cohort" system will foster more team connections as multiple applicants are onboarded to the team in the same timeframe.
-
What is the difference between applying to become a general volunteer vs. a Campus Brain Ambassador?
-
General volunteer positions are available with teams such as Humans of Neuroscience, The Synapse Podcast, Brain Resource Creation, Presynaptic Project, etc. There is a weekly commitment expected from general volunteers.
-
The Campus Brain Ambassador is a similar initiative but the volunteering commitment is more flexible and can pivot to a hybrid modality if desired. Campus Brain Ambassadors are welcome to pitch projects specifically targeting their school and local community, and we're happy to support!
-
What is the time commitment to volunteer with Simply Neuroscience?
-
It's flexible! Our base expectation is two to three hours a week per each team you are involved with. We expect that volunteers contribute for a minimum of three months.
-
Does Simply Neuroscience offer memberships?
-
We do not offer formal "membership" as all of our resources, opportunities, events, and more are freely available online. However, we welcome all brain enthusiasts to join our informal Simply Neuroscience "family"!
-
Does volunteering take place virtually or in-person?
-
All of our programming and volunteering takes place virtually in accordance with COVID-19 safety guidelines as well as promoting greater accessibility internationally. If you are interested in contributing to hybrid or in-person outreach efforts (especially within your local university or community), check out our Campus Brain Ambassador Network above!
-
Simply Neuroscience volunteers have organized meetups in the past to connect with one another in-person! The most recent meet-ups took place in New York City, USA, and Haryana, India.
-
I have a question that is not answered here.
-
Email us at info@simplyneuroscience.org
-
Please do not message us about the status of your application through Instagram, Twitter, etc. All of our HR team's communications occur through the email address above.
-
How many individuals currently volunteer with Simply Neuroscience?
-
Our team is 350 volunteers strong (including our Campus Brain Ambassadors) and growing every day!
-
Do you offer paid internships?
-
Unfortunately, we do not offer paid positions at the moment but hope to do so in the future!
-
Some universities provide stipends for students planning to work on unpaid opportunities with non-profit organizations. If a similar program exists at your university and you would be interested in pursuing Simply Neuroscience opportunities through this avenue, please reach out at info@simplyneuroscience.org and we can discuss more on a case-by-case basis.
-
Are there any open leadership positions?
-
We usually do not offer leadership positions for external applicants. In rare cases, we will share an open leadership position call on social media.
-
However, all onboarded volunteers are welcome to apply for leadership opportunities when there are openings.
-
What is the background of current volunteers?
-
The majority of our volunteers are 13 to 30 years old and include middle school, high school, undergraduate, and graduate students as well as early-career professionals.
-
I'm a neuroscience enthusiast above 30 years of age and am looking for volunteer opportunities.
-
Thank you for your interest! Please consider volunteering as an Advisor through our virtual mentorship initiative (the "Action Potential Advising Program") or sharing your expertise through a guest speaker event (email us at events@simplyneuroscience.org).
-
Unfortunately, as we are primarily a student-serving organization, we are unable to accommodate volunteers above 30 years old.
-
Please consider reaching out to organizations such as the Society for Neuroscience, ALBA Network, Human Brain Project, Alzheimer's Association, National Alliance on Mental Illness, etc. about other volunteering opportunities.
-
Where can I access specific details about each of the open volunteer positions?
